Yoga - Yoga Asanas and Their Benefits

Yoga is a Sanskrit word and refers to the practice of meditation for the spiritual and physical well being of a person. Yoga has deep roots with Buddhism being probably one of the earliest religions talking about the various meditative practices. Hinduism's earliest reference to yoga is in the Upanishads and states that the practice of yoga gives a person innumerable benefits and keeps them physically and mentally fit. The sage Patanjali is supposed to have formulated the formal principles of yoga and practice of this form of yoga is known as Raja Yoga.

Some important Yoga Asanas or postures and their benefits are:
1. Anjaneya Asana  or the Salutation Posture–benefits the hips, legs, chest, arms and back. This asana contains the performance of many postures and gestures improving concentration and balance.

2. Bala Asana or the Child Posture – This posture is a good start for beginners and is a relaxing pose. This posture relaxes the back, thigh muscles, neck and shoulders.

3. Naga Asana  or Cobra Posture – Beneficial to strengthen the muscles of the lower back and spine. This asana also strengthens the stomach, pelvic muscles, and the wrist and stretches the chest muscles.

4. Matsya Asana or the Fist Posture – This asana is helpful for the heart and in relieving upper respiratory congestion. This asana also stimulates the thyroid and the parathyroid glands.

5. Chakra Asana or the Wheel Posture -  A little difficult to perform this asana however is very good for strengthening the spine, arm, shoulders and the heart.

6. Padamasana or the Lotus Posture – One of the best asanas for meditation this is also a good asana to aid digestion and ease constipation. It also keeps the spine erect and helps persons with arthritis.

7. Pawan Mukth Asana or the Wind Releasing Posture – This asans is very good for stomach upsets and helps release gas and eases constipation.

8. Siddha Asana or the Accomplished Posture - This position establishes the equilibrium of the mind and body. A meditative asana it aids in improving concentration.

9. Surya Namaskar or the Salutation to the Sun – This posture combines 12 different poses with a particular breathing  pattern. This pose vitalizes the body, reduces fat and tones it.

10. Shav Asana or the Corpse pose – Deeply relaxes the body and mind and is used as a relaxing pose.
